ABOUT US: WHO WE ARE AND HOW WE WORK
Meg Quitutua is a journal for home improvement, real estate, interiors and contractors. Honest guides for the curious homeowner, written by people who have paid for the work, not salesmen.
Who we are
We are a small crew of writers, surveyors and tradespeople who got tired of sales brochures pretending to be advice. Meg Quitutua started in 2021 as a shared notebook, a place to record what a renovation really cost and which shortcuts failed six months later. Today it reaches thousands of monthly readers planning repairs, purchases and room changes.
Our mission
We help you make a better decision about your home. Every week we publish free news and buying guides on home improvement, real estate, interior design, contractors and DIY tools: real 2026 prices, material trade-offs and steps you can act on. No sponsored picks, no filler, no press release disguised as a review.
Editorial standards
No sponsored picks, no pay-to-rank lists. We buy at retail what we test, disclose relationships, and correct mistakes in public within 48 hours. Numbers come from itemised quotes, receipts and public sources such as the US Department of Energy and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, never from a brand's marketing deck. If a product fails in real use, we say so.
The team
Mira Halvorsen (home improvement, 12 years), Priya Raman (property and valuation, 10 years), Elena Duarte (interiors, 9 years), Owen Mbeki (contracts and site management, 14 years), Jonah Whitfield (tools, 8 years) and a bench of contributing surveyors and tradespeople who review every guide before it ships.
How we test
Testing starts with a real job. We collect three quotes for the same scope, read the exclusions and follow the work through to completion where we can. Tools are used on timber, masonry and the tasks they were sold for. We note the boring details that decide a purchase: how a drill balances after an hour, how a finish marks, how a contract handles a delay.
Where a project is too large to run ourselves, we interview the people who did it and check the invoices. We do not rely on a single source, and we do not present a showroom demonstration as a field test.
How we make money
We earn from display advertising and from an occasional affiliate link, and that is the whole list. We do not sell placements, we do not accept free renovations in exchange for coverage, and no brand sees a draft before you do.
An affiliate link never changes a verdict. If a product we earn from fails a test, we say so in the same words we would use for any other. You can read every guide without clicking a single link.
Corrections policy
When we get something wrong we fix it fast. Contact us with the page and the problem. We aim to reply within one business day and to publish a correction within 48 hours. Small fixes are silent; bigger errors, such as a wrong price or a misnamed product, get a visible note at the foot of the article.
What we cover
Our home improvement desk covers the work that changes how a house performs: kitchens, bathrooms, insulation, roofs, windows and the awkward repairs that hide behind fresh paint. The real estate desk deals with buying, valuing and selling, including the checks that happen before a survey. Interiors covers layouts, materials and furniture that fit real rooms, while contractors covers hiring, contracts and site management. DIY tools covers the equipment a household actually needs and how to use it safely.
We do not cover short-term property speculation, get-rich schemes or anything that depends on hiding a defect from a buyer. If a topic needs a licensed professional on site, we say so and explain what that professional should check.
How to use the site
Start with the category that matches your problem, then read the key facts box before the full guide. The box gives you the short version, and the sections below it explain the trade-offs. Where a price is given, it is a 2026 range rather than a quote, because labour and materials move by region.
If you are planning a large project, read the article once before you call anyone, then use the checklist while you collect quotes. A little preparation makes every conversation more useful and makes it harder for a bad contractor to hide an exclusion. Our search box indexes every guide on the site if you already know what you need.
